it never ends

As usual, there's something new on the horizon that will need to be fought. The lovely state of Oregon has decided it would like to place Alex in a home just south of Eugene. They are "confident this will be an excellent home for Alex", despite the fact that it is a 4 1/2 hour round trip car ride to see his neurologist, nephrologist and cardiologist in Portland. It's okay though! According to the State, "The drive for OHSU apts will be long but we will ask for PRN oral sedatives to be ordered for those days to assist him with tolerating the distance better." Oh! Okay! That makes everything better. Let's just go ahead and drug up my son every time he needs to see his doctor!

Not. First of all, we know that "just sedating" him doesn't work. It's all or nothing with Alex. There is no happy, twilight period where he's just groggy enough to not be upset. He's either groggy and more upset than before, or he's totally knocked out asleep. We have been through this before - trying to find something to make him blissfully unaware and not hurt himself. I know it's hard for people to understand, heck, the doctors and nurses in the ER had to witness it firsthand...they were sure they'd be able to just give him enough to take the edge off. Never happened.

And even if it did work, we do not want our son drugged up! Plain and simple. Alex doesn't deserve to be shoved into the first facility that has an opening. Alex does not deserve to have more meds shoved down his throat. Alex deserves to live near his family and his healthcare. Alex deserves so much more than this state is giving him.
