So I was doing a little more research on this drug RAD-001 (otherwise known as Everolimus, otherwise known as Afinitor, otherwise known as Certican) that Alex would be taking in the study, and came across this:
AFINITOR tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water. The tablets should not be chewed or crushed.
and then this:
AFINITOR tablets should not be crushed. Direct contact of crushed tablets with the skin or mucous membranes should be avoided. If such contact occurs, wash thoroughly as outlined in the references. Personnel should avoid exposure to crushed tablets.
Well, crap. We crush Alex's meds, put in a little strawberry syrup and give it all to him in a syringe. We've tried the whole pill thing in the past - hiding it it food, even using a special medication straw - and that did not work for more than one dose. After the first dose, Alex would go just about anorexic thinking there were hidden meds in all his food. The straw worked once, but once he knew there was a pill in there he'd only suck softly and carefully, which only made the pill soggy and stick to the straw. I'm pretty sure there'd be no way to give him a pill and be able to guarantee that he would swallow it down. When we've forced a pill down him, it gets soggy and melts in his mouth, which causes him to foam at the mouth and scream at the nasty taste we're forcing in him. Nope, won't work. Of course, I'll ask the doctors first to make sure it's not an over reaction on the manufacturer's part, but it sounds like there must be a good reason to not touch any part of the pill dust.
Crap, crap, crap.
